While attending a regional woodturners meeting with my husband, I signed up for several craft classes they provided for the wives. Two of the classes were related to glass fusing which was mesmerizing!
In the first “glass class” we made a jewelry pendant using a ceramic mold. Our instructor said the mold I got was the most difficult because it’s layered upside down. It was so much fun and exciting to see how the glass melted together after being fired overnight in the kiln. Since this was my first fused glass piece, it seemed like the perfect name for a site to share what I’m working on.
In the second glass fusing class we made fused glass night light panels. The group made a nice variety. Mine turned out to have a geometrical look. When heated high enough to melt, glass wants to level out to a thickness of 6mm (or ¼ inch high) unless it’s retained by something. The end result depends on the temperature used to fire and length of time it’s held at that temperature. The slope at the top of my night light was due to that area only being a single 3mm thickness which caused it to shrink in that place. The picture shown at night really doesn’t do it justice.
There will be more night lights in the future!
